PREMIO A NUESTRO QUERIDO RICKY

Premio INSPIRACIÓN en GALA de AmfAR: American Foundation for Aids Research

Advocate.com/ June 04, 2010/By Julie Bolcer

Ricky Martin received the Award of Inspiration from amfAR at a star-studded gala that included Kylie Minogue, Cyndi Lauper, Jean Paul Gaultier, and Cheyenne Jackson in New York City on Thursday.

In one of his first public appearances since he came out, Ricky Martin attended the amfAR Inspiration Gala in New York City and received the Award of Inspiration Thursday evening. Host Kylie Minogue presented him with the honor in recognition of his global philanthropic efforts. The inaugural awards also were attended by Cyndi Lauper, Cheyenne Jackson, and honoree Jean Paul Gaultier.

In his brief acceptance speech, Martin stuck to the business of doing good. He dedicated his award to a young Cambodian girl infected with HIV that he met two years ago in his work against human trafficking.

“Today, I speak on her behalf,” he said. “This award is for her. This award, I’m going to take to Cambodia again. I’m going to give it to her.”

Martin’s contributions, as introduced by Minogue, include work on social justice, education, and health care issues such as pediatric AIDS. He has served as a global ambassador for UNICEF.

Throughout the evening, Martin could be seen graciously receiving guests at his seat in the hall at the New York Public Library. Also seated at the table was
30 Rock and Broadway star Cheyenne Jackson and his partner, Monte Lapka.

Earlier in the night, Minogue chatted with reporters before the start of the runway show featuring male Wilhelmina models including her boyfriend, Andres Velencoso Segura. She gushed with excitement over her forthcoming album,
Aphrodite, and the orgiastic new video for the lead single, "All the Lovers."

“People go nuts over it, so that’s amazing,” she said of the video, directed by Joseph Kahn. “He came up with a brilliant, simple idea and executed it so sensitively, I thought. It’s still cutting edge, it still gets you a little hot under the collar, but I think there’s a real sensitivity. It’s what I’m about and what I love.”

Minogue saluted Gaultier, who received an Award of Inspiration for his contributions to menswear and the humanitarian spirit. She said the French designer supplied outfits for
Aphrodite, as well as her tour costumes.

Gaultier hailed the condom as the best outfit of the 20th century in his acceptance speech for his award.

The sold-out amfAR Inspiration Gala in New York was the first of three set to honor men’s style and raise money for AIDS research. Other galas will be held in Los Angeles and Paris.

Cyndi Lauper closed out the night with music from her new album
Memphis Blues. Singers Kelly Rowland and Estelle joined her later for a rendition of the classic, “Girls Just Want to Have Fun.”

¿ BENEFICIOS FEDERALES A PAREJAS GAY, SI O NO ?

Washington Post /June 2, 2010/ By Ed O'Keefe

The same-sex partners of gay and lesbian federal workers can start applying next month for long-term health-care insurance, the Office of Personnel Management said Tuesday.

President Obama signed a memo last June extending some benefits to same-sex partners of federal workers, including access to the government's Federal Long Term Care Insurance Program. On Tuesday, OPM essentially broadened the definition of relatives eligible for the program to include same-sex domestic partners of eligible federal workers, U.S. Postal Service workers and federal retirees.

OPM will not extend access to opposite-sex domestic partners, because they can obtain the insurance through marriage, "an option not currently available to same-sex domestic partners," the agency wrote in Tuesday's Federal Register.

OPM said same-sex couples can visit www.ltcfeds.com to complete a form that states they are each other's domestic partner and intend to stay together indefinitely. The federal worker must submit the form to their employer. Couples will not be required to provide further proof of the relationship, OPM said, because that "would impose a greater burden on domestic partners than other qualified relatives." The agency said it does not ask opposite-sex couples for bank statements or other proof of marriage.

Tuesday's ruling applies only to FLTCIP, no other federal health-care or insurance programs. Same-sex partners must answer the same questions about their health as other qualified relatives, and are not guaranteed to be approved for coverage. Eligible federal workers do not need to be enrolled in FLTCIP in order for a same-sex partner to apply or be eligible, OPM said.

LA CIENCIA: EL "GAYDAR" EXISTE

Mail Online / June 01,2010/by Fiona Macrae

Gaydar really exists: Scientists prove gay people are more able to pick out fellow homosexuals

Gay people really do have an inbuilt radar that helps them seek out like-minded souls, scientists have shown.

This sixth sense, or 'gaydar', ensures they pay more attention to detail, allowing them to pluck potential partners out of a crowd.

The Dutch researchers looked at whether straight and gay people focus their attention differently when faced with a problem.

A total of 42 men and women were shown pictures of outlines of large squares and rectangles, each of which was packed with smaller shapes.

Our brains are wired to take in the bigger picture, meaning that if we are shown a square filled with rectangles and asked what is inside, we can easily be fooled into saying 'squares'.

When the men and women were asked similar questions, the heterosexuals replied more quickly but were less accurate, the journal Frontiers in Cognition reports.

The homosexuals took longer but got more answers right, particularly when asked about the smaller shapes, suggesting they were able to see the small details as well as the bigger picture.

Or they were able to see the trees as well as the wood.

In everyday life, this attention to detail could help them work out people's sexuality.

Researcher Dr Lorenza Colzato, of Leiden University in the Netherlands, said: 'This is the first time that scientific proof has been found for the existence of a gaydar mechanism amongst homosexuals.

‘This perceptual skill allows homosexuals to recognise other gay people faster and we think it's because they are much more analytic than heterosexuals.'

Adopting such a perceptual style presumably increases the likelihood of detecting perceptual clues indicative of homosexual orientation, which facilitates finding like-minded social peers and potential friends and sex mates.

Differences in attention to detail have previously been shown among religious groups, with Italian Roman Catholics looking at the bigger picture more than those with secular views and Israeli Orthodox Jews paying less attention to detail than Israeli non-believers.

Dr Colzato said: 'This fits with the strong emphasis on social solidarity in both Catholicism and Orthodox Judaism.'

In contrast, Dutch Calvinists, who are counselled on 'minding their own business', focus on detail rather than the bigger picture.

SORPRENDENTE OPINION DE LA MAYORÍA SOBRE RELACIONES GAY

MOST AMERICANS SAY GAY RELATIONSHIPS ARE MORAL

Gallup’s 2010 poll on values and morality has found 53% of American adults believe gay relationships are morally acceptable. Forty-three percent say they are morally wrong. This is the first time the poll has found a majority of respondents who are okay with the concept of same-sex couples.

A closer look at the question’s responses finds sharp divisions based on political affiliation. Just 35% of Republicans think same-sex relationships are morally acceptable, but nearly twice as many Democrats and Independents say they are. The poll found almost no difference between men and women on the issue.

The latest numbers are in line with an earlier Gallup report that said opposition to marriage equality for same-sex couples had fallen to its lowest level ever.
